25th Anniversary of the Super Mario Bros Movie
May 28, 2018Today marks 25 years since the release of the Super Mario Bros movie. That fateful day – May 28th, 1993, we were graced with what was highly anticipated movie of Nintendo’s number one game at the time. Riding high on the wave of successes with their NES games and the more recent (at the time) SNES Super Mario World, it seemed natural to have a feature film.
Unfortunately, despite some significant star power in Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper, the movie wasn’t very well received. The production was riddled with problems and as such, the movie ended up suffering in the final results.
Super Mario Bros. was shot in both New York City and North Carolina on a budget of $48 million. It was released on May 28, 1993, in the United States and grossed $20.9 million.
