DISCUSSION: Does Anyone Still Care About Retro Mini Consoles?
December 7, 2018YouTuber This Does Not Compute posted an interesting video discussing the current state of ‘mini’ or ‘Classic Edition’ retrogaming consoles. He is wondering if the market is cooling for these devices?
Here is my take on it:
I still think there is a place for high quality ‘mini’ or throwback systems. Using the Nintendo mini consoles as an example, they are fun and excellent ways to relive some old games in a nearly 100% authentic way.
The problem is that there is a massive amount of junk coming to the stores under the ‘retrogaming’ banner. Tons of stuff from companies like Atgames or other ‘knock off’ level garbage all over Amazon and Ebay. Even the PS1 Classic is junk. The constant flow of junk is giving the whole industry a bad taste to consumers.
I fully think that if high quality throwback consoles come out and give us a great experience with some stand out games, people will clamor around it. For example, if someone were to make a really HQ TurboGraphx 16 Mini console, I would be all over it. It was a console I never got to experience back in the day, and I don’t want to start collecting for it (it is expensive). So, a reasonably priced quality experience with a bunch of stand out games from the library is super enticing.
Check out his video below and let me know what you think about the topic? Do you think the market is getting tired of these mini consoles, or is it getting tired of junk retrogaming merchandise?
