Friday the 13th on NESFor this #wedNESday I showcased one of my favorite ‘bad’ games on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Friday the 13th.  Friday the 13th is a horror game based on the movies of the same name. It was developed by Altus and published in 1989 by LJN.

The gameplay consists of you (the camp counselers) attempting to defeat Jason by lighting all of the cabin fire places.  You must also defend the children staying at the camp from being killed. Jason will randomly show up at one of the many cabins around the map and you must rush there as fast as you can to fight him.

It is considered by many (or at least myself) to be one of the first Survival Horror type game.  It features creepy moody music and even leverages what you might consider ‘jump scares’.  Visually, it is nothing special now, but does feature enough detail to mostly get the point across.

The game isn’t all great, though.  It features a convoluted plot, not so forgiving controls and is just plain hard. If you have never played this game and want to give it a shot, I highly recommend that you read the manual first.  If you don’t, you will definitely be confused about what you are supposed to do and what is happening as the game progresses.

What do you think of Friday the 13th for the NES, answer in the comments below!
