What is your Favorite Mario Bros game on the NES?May 31, 2018
I have often been torn about which of the Mario games on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was my favorite. I mean, I started with Super Mario Bros when I got my Action Set back when I was about 8. It was an amazing game. It was both difficult to master, fun to play and not overly complicated. They showed you nearly everything you needed to know about the game in the first screen. It is brilliant game design.
When Super Mario Bros 2 came out, we absolutely had to have it. We of course, like many others at the time, were somewhat thrown for a loop by this game. It was an awesome game, excellent platforming and fun graphics. Yet, something a lot different than the first game. We didn’t have much to go one, though, so like Zelda 2 was a curveball sequel from the original Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros 2 didn’t really need to match the first game. At the time, we had no idea that Nintendo pulled a switch on us and repackaged a different game (Doki Doki Panic) for North American gamers. Later when I learned about that change, it all made a lot more sense.
In 1990, Nintendo released Super Mario Bros 3. It was a massive success and received a massive marketing push to help it along. It was even featured in a full length motion picture, “The Wizard“. The game moved back toward what the original Super Mario Bros was and expanded upon it dozens of times over. Larger levels, more enemies, varied stages each with their own theme, the game was a magnificent and nearly perfect gaming experience. Suffice to say, many people still consider this to be one of the best Mario games ever, if not one of the best games of all time.
On Twitter, I ran a poll asking for everyone’s vote on their “Favorite Mario Game on the NES”. You can see the results below! As expected, part 3 came out on top, though 2 had a decent showing of support.
