What Was Your Favorite First RPG?
June 4, 2018I asked a simple question on Twitter… What was your favorite first RPG?
QUESTION: What was your first favorite RPG?
My first favorite #RPG was Final Fantasy for the #NES. #retrogaming #nintendo #sega #gamersunite #wpugamers pic.twitter.com/up5xIfAhUI

These are in no particular order and I apologize if I don’t highlight your answer, there were a ton to sort through. These are just a few that I grabbed to share for fun!
The Legend of Zelda
I saw quite a few mentions of The Legend of Zelda for the NES. Naturally, I can’t argue with this choice as it is one of my most favorite games of all time!
Zelda, but turn based goes to Final Fantasy 2 on snes!

Still one of the most iconic and memorable today. pic.twitter.com/lRWPicw600

Phantasy Star
There were a quite a few mentions of the Phantasy Star series so Sega was not forgotten on this topic. Phantasy Star spanned a multitude of systems, starting with the original game on the 8-bit Sega Master System.
Phantasy Star IV. A piece of art cursed by a horrible cover. Alys' death just shattered my heart back in the day. I still got the feels whenever I listen to that music. pic.twitter.com/fm8HPVtuhI

Phantasy Star II

Either "Final Fantasy 4" (known as FF2 in the West) or "Secret of Mana" on the SNES or "Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millennium" on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.

Final Fantasy
As you can see in the original question, my first choice was Final Fantasy on the NES. There were quite a few people who seconded that notion, as well as plenty of other mentions of other games in the series. The series started on the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System and is still going strong with the latest entry (#15) just being released on this generation of consoles.
Final Fantasy II (IV) on SNES and still remains my absolute favorite RPG today. pic.twitter.com/cpOHrjcmjR

Final Fantasy 3/6, and still my favorite.

FF7 predictable but true

Final Fantasy for #NES was my first ever ROG experience, and it hooked me for many years. Chrono Trigger, FF3/6, and Earthbound solidified my RPG love.
— Milk (@Milkmantyler) June 4, 2018
Final Fantasy IV. I loved how every single character had a very distinct story and set of skills/spells.
It cemented my decision of becoming a Videogame Developer. I’m lacking a couple of versions but I aim to have every single release/port of it.
It’s THAT influential to me.

I was never really an RPG gamer, but the first one I really enjoyed playing was Final Fantasy 8 for the Playstation. pic.twitter.com/cFSPxVN3Qc

Dragon Warrior (or Dragon Quest)
Many of us older gamers got our first big experience with RPGs when we got a free copy of Dragon Warrior with our subscription to Nintendo Power. It was a pretty spectacular deal and the game was a wonderful experience to play. The game went onto produce many more games and is still active today.
Dragon Warrior! Wasn't much of a story but damn was it fun at the time
— Joshua Ian (@JoshuaIan610) June 4, 2018
I just posted about this earlier, but my first RPG was Dragon Warrior for the NES. It came free with a subscription to Nintendo Power. I had no familiarity with RPGs so I had no idea what I was doing. Turned me off of the genre for a long time.

Dragon Warrior for the NES and the 12 page fold out guide in NP for one or two magazines! Loved the artwork, the monsters, and 1st person perspective in the game made it feel like you were really there fighting them.

Dragon Warrior/Quest 2

Others
Here are some other great choices made! I have played many of these, but not all – it is a good selection of unique games in the RPG genre that are worth checking out.
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber
A strategy, rts rpg with a convoluted plot and LOTS of number crunching and class diversity.
I can honestly root my passionate love for #DnD4E to this. pic.twitter.com/q9bHfwwsTo
— Eothr 'Maurice' Si'lan (@DJusticar) June 4, 2018
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, and is still my favorite game, RPG or otherwise, today.
— Valkav (@justvalkav) June 4, 2018
Willow for me, all the way. I loved the movie as a kid, and it felt (unlike other movie tie-ins) it actually expanded on the film. It was kind of a crossover action RPG for me as a fan of Zelda: minimal grinding, good story, interesting puzzles, and very atmospheric. pic.twitter.com/IELlHAZpa9

Shadowgate on the NES

Not my first RPG, but my first favourite would have to be Ultima 4 (on the C64) pic.twitter.com/Jt9dqdcU7c
— 20 Goto 10 (@AardvarkJoe) June 4, 2018
Since games like Rogue (Unix!), Dungeon (PET), and Sword of Fargoal (VIC-20/C64) aren't really RPGs, I think I'll have to go with Ultima III on the C64.

Star wars knights of the old republic 2 the sith lords. Was my first favorite #rpg
